Is There a Way to Thaw Frozen Pipes Before They Burst in My Macomb Township Home?

Our local team in Northeast Macomb Township responds to water damage emergencies caused by frozen and burst pipes often during the winter months in Macomb Township. The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness estimates that a quarter-million homes are damaged each winter due to frozen water pipes. The Michigan MIREADY program offers this helpful information about preventing frozen pipes and thawing pipes if they freeze:
If you are away:
- Set the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing
- Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it's warm enough to prevent freezing
- Shut off and drain the water system. Be aware that if you have a fire protection sprinkler system in your house, it will be deactivated when you shut off the water.
If your pipes freeze:
- Don't take chances. Call a plumber if you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out. If you detect your water pipes have frozen, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve in the house.
- Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or open flame. You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe with warm air from a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of the line.
- Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water. Electrocution is possible.
